First time ever… Chris live on stage (First panel on Friday):
When Christian an J finally arrived on stage, we all cheered lots. They continued showing the convention rules and at some point Christian turned around and read some out for us (boy, he could have read all 13 rules if you ask me! That voice!!!) asking, if they kept showing these during the whole wait. As we responded that they did he threw some comment at us, I didn’t really get.
One has to mention here that the sound really did suck big time. They guys were just too loud and there was some sort of reverberation or echo on their mics that made it really tricky to understand what they said.
They started off with telling us, that this panel would be reversed meaning they would ask us instead of the audience asking them questions. Of course they didn’t do that but both of them really started asking the questions back to the people who asked them in the first place which was funny as some of them couldn’t give an answer and Christian was going on about how they could ask them stuff they hadn’t even thought about themselves.
Christian gave us some information about Hide, his new movie, explaining that the tattoos one can see on some of the pictures were painted this time instead of the sticky transfer picture type of tattoos he was wearing as Lindsey. It took him about 5 hrs. to get those tattoos done in the make up. He also said something about Hide posters and putting them up for us but due to the rotten sound nobody understood what he had said exactly and there was no cheering at all which might have been a little disappointing for him, taking the look on his face.
It was that moment, when J realised there had to be something wrong with the sound and he asked us about it. We explained that it was too loud and hard to understand anything so J was half leaving the stage shouting in the microphone some comments like fucking turn down the volume which set us all giggling again. He then nicely asked them to turn down the volume which they did and it was a little better after that. But the guys also had trouble to understand the questions coming from the audience which ended up in J sort of “translating” the questions for Christian who always made a very funny irritated face every time a question was asked as he just couldn’t get it and looked to J in a very imploring way.
The very first girl who wanted to ask a question couldn’t find the microphone in the beginning. So she was sent into the right direction and while she made her way to the mic, J was making a little fun, starting to tell us some story, beginning with “In the meantime…” which made us all burst into laughter again. He also told us, that he had written and directed a short movie and that he really enjoyed doing that.
The guys were asked how they prepare for a new role. J mentioned something about trying out as many different attempts as possible while Christian told us that he loves to invent a background story for his characters even if it was not necessary or no background was given at all. He would just try to invent the character going from what he had to be like to how he got that way which was really interesting to hear.
A few questions that were asked were pretty good ones and Christian had to really think about the answer. Obviously he couldn’t be bothered to do so on a Friday noon as he always gave a smile and told the people to ask that question again on Sunday where a second panel with him was scheduled. Of course those questions didn’t come up again.
One fan asked them if they preferred acting in Sci-Fi or fantasy movies or TV shows or would rather want to do Real life stuff. They both sort of agreed that Sci-Fi and fantasy was much more appealing as there were more possibilities for the characters and they could take it to a limit while real life stuff always had to be sort of normal and was less fun. They asked the question back and the girl replied that obviously she loved Sci-Fi and Fantasy as otherwise she wouldn’t be at the convention. The audience burst into laughter at the way she said it and the looks she got from J and Christian.
One question was about which character they would have loved to play on Angel. Of course Christian answered that he would have played Angel himself and with an evil grin he added that he would have played him better. Giggles filled the room again on that answer. But honestly: I prefer him being Lindsey the charming yet evil lawyer instead of a dark, always brooding, quite depressed vampire… I believe J said something about being Fred?!
They were asked what they would have wanted for their characters to happen in the show. J answered that he would have loved the idea of Gunn becoming a vampire, the thing he most hated in his life as he then could have staked himself. If this answer has to be taken seriously, I cannot tell. They were also asked about their favourite songs and this is where I really have to apologise to you, guys. Because I was taking notes and pictures during the talk… until the very moment, Christian started singing a few lines from his favoured song and there was that big button saying “Erase” in my brain. I half slid down my chair, my notes hit the ground and I just kept staring at him. Of course I knew about his amazing voice, but I just wasn’t prepared to hear him singing that soon. Everything else that was said on the panel is kinda blurry and I don’t even remember what song it was he sang. I remember that J interrupted him and I really wanted to hit the guy that very moment (though I really like J lots!!)
All in all the panel was nice and despite the sound and understanding problems we had fun.
