Interview with Debra & Jim Meyers for www.spirit-boy.ic.cz

This interview was done by Lucy for our affiliate site Spirit-boy.ic.cz and she gave us permission to post it here, too. Thank you very much for that, Lucy!

1.Can you describe us the way of the film script?
I think you're asking what the process is for writing a film script? Generally Jim and I begin with an idea that we think a lot about. Such as "Her Minor Thing" started because of a friend of ours allowed her boyfriend to treat her meanly. He wasn't abusive but he didn't really LIKE her either. And she put up with it. So then we started on a story about a gal that was having a lot of dating issues; running to the next guy, not finding what she wanted, settling for what she's finding. Then I mentioned the whole virgin thing was such a HUGE issue too. Are you a virgin? Well great… let's sleep together, but I'm going to marry a virgin. In America there's a lot of swirl around this - so we ran with it. After you create the story, then you write the screenplay which is very minimal compared to a book.

2. How long does it take to write the script?
For us it normally takes a year from start to finish. We do a lot of intense work on the story before Jim starts the script. Then we meet about the script during a draft and at the end of a draft. Sometimes we do 10 drafts!

3. How you choose actors for main character (Jeana, Paul, Tom)?
We had an excellent casting director named Orly Sitowitz who found our actors. She would create lists of actors and send them to Jim. Jim would run out and get movies of the actors and we'd watch the scene they were in. The scene where we picked Paul (Christian Kane) was Christian lying in bed beside Angelina Jolie, getting out of bed with nothing on but cowboy boots. I said to Jim "Oh, He'll do!"

4. Because this web is mostly about Chris and his work, can you tell us something about his personality, how was working with him or some story with him from filming?
I think Christian is really an excellent actor. He is quite intense when he's working. So he wants to work and work hard. He's not great at standing around. He also really LOOKS at things. A story I can tell you is Christian and Michael were going to have a drink after the day's shoot. Outside the bar was a big motorcycle. Christian is really LOOKING this over! Michael is telling him 'Come on Christian, there are GIRLS in there!' He finally turns away from the motorcycle and goes into the bar.

5. Are there any funny or interesting stories which happened during filming?
The whole shoot was a lot of fun due to the funny script and the actors were very light hearted. When we were shooting the scene where Christian double parks the car and runs to Jeana's (Estella) door, there was a group of girls from Spain in Sacramento to learn English. They saw that we were shooting and came over. When they recognized Christian from "Angel" they went crazy! They were screaming and crying. We had to get them to keep quiet and shot the scenes then he and Estella went over and signed autographs, had their picture taken with each of those girls (there were at least 20!) and gave kisses on the cheek.

6. Can you describe three main actors by one sentence?
Perfect for "Her Minor Thing" because of their comic, timing and ability to bring the script to life.

7. What inspired you to write Her minor thing?
A friend as I said above. We wanted to write a main stream romantic comedy that was upbeat and positive without being sappy. We love comedy and wanted it to be very funny.

8. Could you tell us something about your work?
We're working on finishing another script to sell and we're also working on producing another movie. Both are in progress at this time.

9. Is there any goal which you would like to reach?
Make good movies which positively influence people and to have fun!

10. Where are you taking inspiration for work?
Jim and I frequently read and find hilarious things in the paper or on the web. We just watch people in general. People often tell us stories like "You cannot believe what happened to me today." So we may take a bit of this, a bit of that to push together into a script. We also enjoy other movies and the OLD 30's & 40's movies.

11. When you feel sad and blue, do you have some tip on good mood?
Having a mocha at Starbucks with my husband. I love to tell him a joke too. He laughs always - even when it's not funny. Or playing with our son who's six and KNOWS everything.

12. In Czech republic are a lots of fans of "Her Minor Thing" and I believe that by the time there will be much more of them. Is there something you would like to "tell" them?
That I am quite pleased that they enjoy our work. We hope you'll enjoy future movies we will do and find us to be just like you - enjoying life and telling stories about life. So please join us at Her Minor Thing and check up on us on our Her Minor Thing Forum - I post there quite often and have a good laugh with my friends there. They are just like you, friends who like "Her Minor Thing".

In the end I would like to say THANK YOU to both of you. Thanks for your time and that your film brought us together.

Please DO NOT USE this interview without our noticing.
